A former employee of the Office of the Auditor General has denied five criminal charges arising from allegations that she used a forged university degree to obtain and retain public employment.
Hannah Wambui Mwaura, also known as Anna Wambui Mwaura, appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Harrison Barasa at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on Friday, where she pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
According to the prosecution, Mwaura is accused of fraudulently obtaining Ksh28,468,754.14 in salary from the Office of the Auditor General between July 3, 2013 and May 23, 2024, while serving as an Assistant Manager in the Audit Department. Prosecutors allege she secured the position using a forged Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting Option), Second Class Honours Upper Division degree purportedly issued by Mount Kenya University.
She is also charged with deceiving a principal under the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act. The prosecution alleges that during her application for employment, she misrepresented to the Office of the Auditor General that she possessed a genuine university degree.
In addition, Mwaura faces a forgery charge, with prosecutors alleging she unlawfully created the degree certificate intending it to be accepted as an authentic document issued by Mount Kenya University.
The charge sheet further accuses her of uttering a false document by presenting the alleged forged certificate to the Office of the Auditor General in support of her employment.
She also faces a count of providing false information to a public entity, with the prosecution alleging that she knowingly declared in official employment records that she held a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Mount Kenya University despite allegedly knowing the information to be false.
The court released Mwaura on a bond of Ksh1 million or an alternative cash bail of Ksh450,000.
The case will be mentioned on August 19, 2026, for pre-trial directions as the prosecution prepares to proceed with the matter.
