Woman charged with Sh36M fraud has been released on bail

A woman accused of defrauding a businesswoman Sh36 million has been released on a cash bail of Sh3 million after her lawyer made submissions before the court.

Lilian Wangui Odwoma, also known as Lilian Weru, appeared before Milimani Magistrate Dolphina Alego, where she denied the fraud charges.

The court heard that Wangui allegedly conspired with other individuals who are yet to appear in court to defraud Elizabeth Wanjiku Muigai of USD 50,000 and Sh30 million.

The alleged offence took place between May 6 and May 20, 2024, in Westlands, Nairobi.

According to the prosecution, Wangui falsely claimed that she could help the complainant obtain a standby letter of credit from Pacific Concord International FZC in Dubai.

Court grants Sh3 million cash bail

Through her lawyer John Swaka, Wangui asked the court to consider releasing her on bail, citing health concerns.

After hearing submissions from both sides, the court granted her a cash bail of Sh3 million.

She will remain out of custody as she awaits the hearing of the case.

Additional charges filed

Wangui also faces two additional charges related to the alleged acquisition and use of proceeds of crime.

The court directed that the matter will be mentioned on September 16, 2025, for further directions.
