A Nairobi court has dismissed an application by Cheekati Narasimha, a businessman accused of stealing Sh254 million from his employer, seeking the release of his travel documents.
Sh254M theft suspect denied travel request
The court rejected the application after lawyer Kimani Wachira, representing the alleged victim, strongly opposed it. Wachira also questioned the validity of the medical documents presented and the applicant’s claimed relationship with his father, who is allegedly a doctor.
Narasimha had applied before Principal Magistrate Caroline Nyaguthii to have his travel documents released. He wanted to travel to India to visit his sick father.
However, Nyaguthii dismissed the application, saying the applicant had failed to provide sufficient evidence to support his request.
“The court has not received any document including birth certificate or any medical documents showing that his father is indeed hospitalized,” Nyaguthii ruled.
Lawyer opposes Sh254M theft suspect’s travel
Wachira urged the court to dismiss the application. He argued that Narasimha could use the opportunity to escape justice.
The accused had told the court that he needed to travel to India to care for his sick father. He said his father suffers from a neurological condition affecting his spinal cord and nerves, with screws embedded in his neck.
Wachira, however, disputed the claim. He said the court had not received any medical report concerning the accused’s father.
Instead, he said, the applicant had submitted only an unauthorised letter. According to Wachira, the letter did not sufficiently establish the alleged familial relationship.
“Regarding the neurological condition that necessitates his travel outside the country, there is no formal medical report, but merely a record indicating that he visited a facility known as Citi Neuro Centre on August 26, 2024, and August 29, 2024, as an outpatient, simply walking in and out of the facility,” he added.
Narasimha faces Sh254 million theft charges
Narasimha, a former employee of Printing Services Limited, faces charges of stealing Sh254 million from the company.
He is accused of stealing Sh254,461,768, which belonged to Printing Services Limited and came into his possession by virtue of his employment.
Rao is alleged to have committed the offence on diverse dates between January 1, 2016, and August 31, 2024, in Nairobi, jointly with others who are not before the court.
The accused also faces a charge of forging the signature of the managing director of Printing Services Limited.
Accused faces forgery charge
According to the charge sheet, Rao allegedly forged the signature of Malkiat Singh Dhillon on a letter of appointment.
The letter allegedly promoted him to the position of Production Manager at Printing Services Limited. Prosecutors allege that he presented it as a document signed by PSL Managing Director Malkiat Singh Dhillon.
The alleged offence occurred on April 1, 2010, at an unknown place within Kenya, with the intent to deceive.
He denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Lukas Onyina and received a cash bail of Sh3 million.
