Senator Gloria Orwoba has received a reprieve after the court suspended her expulsion from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party.
High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi suspended the decision pending the hearing and determination of an urgent application filed by Orwoba.
Court suspends UDA expulsion decision
Judge Mugambi issued a conservatory order stopping the implementation of the UDA Party Disciplinary Committee decision dated May 16, 2025.
“Pending hearing and determination of this application, a conservatory order is hereby issued suspending the implementation of the decision of the UDA Party Disciplinary Committee dated 16/05/2025 expelling the petitioner herein as member of the UDA Party and/or a nominated senator,” ruled Mugambi.
The matter will be mentioned on June 3, 2025.
Orwoba challenges disciplinary action
The court issued the directive after Orwoba’s legal team, led by lawyer Moses N. Mabeya, challenged UDA’s decision and sought urgent intervention.
Mabeya asked the court to suspend the disciplinary proceedings and stop UDA and the Registrar of Political Parties, who was named as an interested party, from taking any action that could lead to Orwoba’s removal from office.
UDA cites alleged misconduct
In a statement signed by Committee Chairperson Charles Njenga on May 7, UDA cited three alleged instances of misconduct.
One of the issues raised by the party was Orwoba’s attendance at the welcoming ceremony of former Cabinet Secretary Matiang’i at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Orwoba is challenging the decision by the UDA Disciplinary Committee to summon her over allegations that she violated the party’s code of conduct.
The party accused her of aligning herself with former CS Matiang’i and attending his homecoming event.
Senator accuses UDA of unfair process
Through a certificate of urgency filed by Mabeya & Mabeya Advocates, Orwoba accused UDA of procedural impropriety, bias and constitutional violations.
She argues that the disciplinary process was designed to unfairly remove her from her position as a nominated senator.
The court will consider the application before making further directions on the dispute.
