Munja Group, in partnership with House of Procurement (HOP), has launched a historic 1,600-kilometre electric vehicle (EV) road trip from Nairobi to Addis Ababa.

The six-day journey, dubbed “Road to Addis,” aims to showcase the future of sustainable transport in Africa and demonstrate the potential of cross-border electric mobility.

Africa’s first cross-border EV convoy begins journey

The Road to Addis expedition is being presented as Africa’s first cross-border EV convoy, highlighting the growing shift toward cleaner transportation solutions.

The convoy will travel through Kenya and Ethiopia, connecting communities while demonstrating the practicality of electric vehicles for long-distance travel.

Munja Group said the initiative represents a major step toward creating sustainable transport networks across the continent.

The company aims to show that clean and connected mobility solutions are achievable in Africa.

Partnership supports electric mobility growth

The initiative brings together several partners, including Kenya Power and Lighting Company, Kenya’s Ministry of Roads and Transport, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Transport and Logistics, the Cars Society of Africa, and Eazy Power PLC.

The partners will support efforts to promote electric vehicle adoption and develop sustainable mobility solutions.

Munja Group said it wants to go beyond vehicle supply by providing complete EV solutions, including leasing services, solar-powered charging hubs, and charging infrastructure.

EV convoy to promote sustainable transport

The electric vehicles will leave Nairobi on October 5, 2025, during a public send-off event.

The convoy will then travel through towns and communities in Kenya and Ethiopia before arriving in Addis Ababa on October 10.

Organizers will establish temporary charging stations along the route to demonstrate how EV infrastructure can support long-distance journeys.

The campaign will also feature driver experiences, community engagements, and discussions on the future of electric mobility.

Kenya pushes regional e-mobility transition

Kenya Power Managing Director and CEO Dr. Eng. Joseph Siror said the company remains committed to supporting the country’s transition to clean transport.

He noted that Kenya currently has more than 6,400 electric vehicles on its roads, with adoption continuing to grow.

According to Siror, expanding electric mobility beyond national borders will require stronger regional cooperation and reliable charging networks.

“Kenya Power stands ready to support this transition by working with government, investors, and the public to position Kenya as a continental leader in e-mobility,” Siror said.

Road to Addis prepares for Africa E-Mobility Week

The journey will end in Addis Ababa ahead of the Africa E-Mobility Week scheduled for October 14–16.

The event, hosted by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), will focus on advancing electric mobility across the continent.

Through the Road to Addis campaign, organizers hope to encourage investment, innovation, and partnerships that will accelerate Africa’s transition to sustainable transport.
