Parents of students at Litein Boys High School have moved to court to stop the school’s management from demanding KSh69 million in compensation following a student strike.
PTA challenges school’s compensation demand
The PTA appointed lawyers Danstan Omari, Samson Nyaberi and Shadrack Wambui to represent the parents.
The lawyers will ask the High Court to stop the school from enforcing the compensation demand.
Parents oppose KSh69 million assessment
The lawyers told journalists at the Milimani Law Courts that Litein Boys High School has about 1,500 students.
They said the school wants each parent to pay KSh49,000 before students can return to class.
The parents argue that the amount is excessive.
They also claim the Board of Management privately hired a quantity surveyor from Nakuru to assess the damaged property.
According to the PTA, the surveyor initially valued the damage at KSh99 million.
The school later reduced the figure to KSh69 million.
However, the parents still believe the revised amount is too high.
Lawyers call for long-term solutions
The lawyers said the recent unrest marked the third student strike at the school.
They argued that the management should focus on preventing future strikes instead of imposing heavy financial demands on parents.
Concerns over form four students
The PTA also questioned the school’s decision to recall only Form One and Form Two students.
Parents say the school has not allowed Form Four candidates to return.
They argue that the decision could disrupt preparations for the national examinations scheduled to begin next week.
