Senator Mundigi responds, rejects party’s expulsion threat

by Faith Karanja

Embu Senator Alexander Munyi Mundigi has rejected the Democratic Party of Kenya’s move to expel him.

In his response, the senator says he has not breached any party rules.

The Senator Mundigi expulsion threat dispute follows a warning letter issued by the party leadership.

DP accuses Senator of misconduct

The Democratic Party (DP) accused Mundigi of gross misconduct.

In a letter dated November 18, 2025, Secretary-General Dr. Jacob Haji claimed the senator campaigned for a candidate who lacked the party’s endorsement in the Mbeere North by-election.

The party also accused him of publicly supporting the Kenya Kwanza coalition after DP announced its withdrawal.

DP gave Mundigi 72 hours to explain his actions or face disciplinary action, including possible expulsion.

Mundigi rejects the allegations

Mundigi responded through Danstan Omari & Associates Advocates on December 18, 2025.

He denied all allegations and argued that the party acted before hearing his side.

The senator insists he remains a loyal member of the Democratic Party.

Senator questions coalition exit

Mundigi’s lawyers argue that DP has not formally left the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

They say the party must convene the National Delegates Committee and the National Governing Council before exiting the coalition.

According to the response, party leader Justin Bedan Muturi announced a political exit on March 12, 2025.

However, the lawyers argue that the announcement did not complete the constitutional process required under the party’s rules.

They therefore maintain that DP legally remains part of the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

On that basis, they argue Mundigi had every right to support candidates within the coalition.

Lawyers criticise party process

The senator’s legal team also questioned how the party handled the complaint.

They say officials contacted Mundigi by phone on December 15 while he attended official duties in Uganda.

According to the lawyers, the senator planned to meet the Secretary-General after returning to Kenya on December 20.

Instead, party officials summoned his personal assistant to Parliament to collect the warning letter.

The advocates argue that the party should have first engaged Mundigi before threatening disciplinary action.

Senator reaffirms loyalty

Mundigi’s lawyers insist that he remains committed to the Democratic Party of Kenya.

They argue that the party’s accusations lack a legal and constitutional basis.

The dispute now raises questions about the party’s relationship with the Kenya Kwanza coalition and the disciplinary process against one of its senior leaders.
