Four charged over Ksh 40 million Sacco fraud in Nairobi

by Faith Karanja

Four individuals have appeared before a Nairobi court over an alleged Ksh 40 million Sacco fraud case.

The prosecution accuses them of running a fraud and money laundering scheme that affected Alya Sacco Society Ltd.

Court documents show that the alleged scheme involved fraudulent transactions and withdrawals from Sacco accounts.

Four accused in Sacco fraud case

The accused persons are Evans Mung’ahu Kola, Fredrick Kuva Libako, Mumina Mutinda Inguji, and Kelvin Muhati Ambowi.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has filed nine charges against them.

The charges include conspiracy to defraud, stealing by servant, and dealing with proceeds of crime.

Alleged fraud at Alya Sacco

The prosecution alleges that the accused carried out the scheme between April 20, 2021, and May 2, 2025.

The alleged offences took place at Alya Sacco offices in Nairobi County.

According to prosecutors, the accused created fake deposits and withdrawals through the Sacco’s Front Office Service Activity (FOSA) accounts.

They claim the transactions appeared genuine but caused the Sacco a loss of KSh40,169,165.69.

Manager faces theft charge

Evans Mung’ahu Kola, who served as Alya Micro Credit Activities manager, faces an additional theft charge.

Prosecutors accuse him of stealing the same amount while acting through his employment position.

The prosecution says Kola received the funds because of his role at the Sacco.

Alleged use of fraud proceeds

The charges also accuse the suspects of acquiring and using money linked to the alleged fraud.

The prosecution listed several amounts in separate counts under the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act (POCAMLA).

Kola and Mumina Mutinda Inguji allegedly acquired KSh24,980,999.97 between December 2021 and May 2025.

Another charge claims Kola and Fredrick Kuva Libako used KSh10,714,999.72 between April 2021 and January 2025.

The prosecution also listed additional amounts of KSh1,702,000 and KSh2,801,616.

Authorities claim the accused knew or should have known that the funds came from criminal activities.

Case continues in court

The four suspects will face the charges as the court considers the allegations.

The prosecution will present evidence to support its claims, while the accused persons will have an opportunity to respond through the legal process.
