A Principal Probation Officer attached to Kangema Law Courts has been charged before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court over an alleged bribery scheme.

A Senior Principal Magistrate from the same station has also been summoned to appear before the court later this week to answer related allegations.

Probation officer charged

Prosecutors charged the probation officer, Julius Irungu Njogu, with receiving a bribe contrary to the Anti-Bribery Act.

Meanwhile, Martin Kinyua Mutegi, a Senior Principal Magistrate at Kangema Law Courts, is expected to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court on July 30, 2026, to take a plea in connection with the same investigations.

Alleged Ksh320,000 bribery scheme

According to the prosecution, Peter Njihia Njuguna was allegedly asked to pay money in exchange for a favourable sentence in Kangema Chief Magistrate’s Criminal Case No. E645 of 2024.

Prosecutors allege that on July 16, 2026, Njogu solicited Ksh170,000 from the complainant on behalf of Magistrate Mutegi.

They further allege that on July 21, 2026, Njogu received Ksh150,000 from the complainant as part of the same arrangement. The alleged payments total Ksh320,000.

Njogu seeks lenient bond terms

During the court session, Njogu requested lenient bond terms. He told the court that he is a senior public officer with about four years remaining before retirement.

He also informed the court that he is a father of three. In addition, he asked the prosecution to provide witness statements and other evidence to help him prepare his defence.

Njogu further requested the release of his mobile phone if investigators do not intend to rely on it as an exhibit during the trial.

Alternatively, he asked the court to allow him to replace the two SIM cards in the handset.

Court grants bond

The Anti-Corruption Court released Njogu on a bond of Ksh800,000 or an alternative cash bail of Ksh400,000 pending the hearing of the case.

Mutegi has not yet taken a plea. He is scheduled to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court on July 30, 2026.

The court is expected to read the charges against him and issue further directions in the matter.
