President Ruto under pressure to suspend top National Police Service officials

by Faith Karanja

Pressure is mounting on President William Ruto to suspend senior National Police Service (NPS) and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officials following recent incidents involving police conduct.

The calls intensified after a business vendor was shot at close range by a police officer during demonstrations in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

UK-based civil society demands action

The Justice and Equity Council (UK Chapter) has urged the President and the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) to suspend senior security officials pending investigations.

In a statement, the organisation’s chairperson, Sebastian Onyango, said accountability is necessary to restore public confidence.

“We, the Justice and Equity Council (UK Chapter), hereby demand that the NPSC immediately suspend or remove the aforementioned officials from their positions,” Onyango said.

Officials named in the statement

The organisation called for the suspension of Inspector General Douglas Kanja, Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, and DCI Director Mohamed Amin.

According to the group, the officials should be held accountable over what it described as failure to adequately protect Kenyans during public demonstrations.

Furthermore, the council argued that decisive action would reinforce constitutional principles and strengthen public trust in law enforcement institutions.

Demonstrations followed Albert Ojwang’s death

The demonstrations disrupted business and transport in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

Protesters demanded justice following the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang, who died while in police custody at Central Police Station.

Consequently, investigators arrested several suspects, including former Central Police Station OCS Samson Talaam and Police Constable James Mukhwana.

Investigations continue

Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat stepped aside to allow investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

The civil society organisation has urged investigators to conduct independent inquiries and ensure accountability for all officers found responsible.

The matter remains under investigation as calls for police reforms continue.
