Health Ministry to partner with innovators to achieve UHC

by Faith Karanja

The Ministry of Health has announced plans to partner with innovators and the private sector as Kenya accelerates efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

The partnership will focus on using technology, digital solutions, and innovative healthcare approaches to improve access to quality medical services across the country.

Government seeks innovation-driven healthcare solutions

Speaking during the opening of the WHX Nairobi and WHX Labs 2025 expo, Dr. Joel Gondi, who represented Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, said innovation remains key to strengthening Kenya’s healthcare system.

He explained that the government is prioritising primary healthcare by focusing on prevention, early detection, and improved service delivery.

Dr. Gondi said the solutions showcased at the expo demonstrate how technology can help bridge healthcare gaps, especially in areas that lack specialised medical professionals.

“I am very excited by the innovative solutions being showcased here from across the globe — products that can bring our dream of UHC to reality, ensuring quality healthcare services reach patients even in areas without specialised experts,” he said.

Digital health at the centre of UHC plans

The Health Ministry is also encouraging innovators and private sector players to support Kenya’s digital health agenda.

Dr. Gondi noted that digital systems can improve healthcare reporting, data management, and service delivery at the community level.

“One of President William Ruto’s priorities is the use of digital solutions at the community level to improve service delivery. We are encouraging the use of digital systems for data and reporting, and we invite the private sector to partner with us to make UHC a reality,” he said.

WHX Nairobi brings healthcare innovators together

The WHX Nairobi and WHX Labs 2025 expo has brought together more than 200 exhibitors, 65 international speakers, and 8,000 delegates from over 20 countries.

The three-day event focuses on healthcare challenges affecting East Africa, including shortages of medical workers, technology adoption, and sustainable healthcare partnerships.

Dr. Gondi said Kenya continues to position itself as a leading centre for healthcare innovation in the region.

“As Kenya, we are proud to be the hub of innovation in this region. We are the gateway to the East and Central Africa market in terms of medical tourism and technology transfer,” he said.

Companies showcase healthcare technologies

Several local and international companies are presenting healthcare solutions at the expo.

Nishimura Medical Instruments Kenya, a Japanese subsidiary authorised to distribute Canon medical systems, is showcasing advanced CT scanner and ultrasound technology.

Bioline Fios Cirurgicos Ltda, a Brazilian company, is highlighting surgical thread solutions used in medical procedures.

Farber Pharma from India is showcasing affordable medicine solutions aimed at improving access to healthcare products.

Radiometer is also presenting TriageGO, an artificial intelligence-powered clinical intelligence tool designed to help emergency departments prioritise patients based on clinical risk.

Innovation key to achieving Universal Health Coverage

The Health Ministry believes partnerships with innovators will help Kenya improve healthcare access, strengthen digital systems, and deliver better services to communities.

The WHX Nairobi and WHX Labs 2025 event runs from October 22 to October 24 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.
