Humphrey Kariuki joins investment council
The National Investment Council advises the government on policies that improve the business environment.
The council also recommends strategies to attract local and foreign investors.
Its members identify challenges affecting investors and propose solutions that encourage economic growth.
Kariuki welcomes appointment
Kariuki thanked President Ruto for the appointment and pledged to support Kenya’s economic agenda.
“Pleased to be appointed to the National Investment Council of Kenya by President Ruto. My commitment to the economic development of Kenya is unwavering. I look forward to working closely with this distinguished council,” he said.
Council brings together public and private sector leaders
The council includes senior government officials and private sector leaders.
Its members include Paul Russo, Peter Njonjo, David Lang’at, Ahmed Farah, Sarah Ochieng, Eva Warigia, Sheila Kyarisiima, Francis Njogu and Tom Mulwa.
Cabinet Secretaries responsible for Trade, Finance, Agriculture, Lands, Tourism and Environment also serve on the council.
The government expects the council to identify barriers to investment and recommend incentives that make Kenya more attractive to investors.
Appointment follows previous legal battle
Kariuki’s appointment comes years after he faced tax-related legal proceedings involving alleged tax evasion worth KSh17 billion during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
Authorities charged Kariuki and several other individuals in the case.
However, the High Court later quashed the criminal proceedings.
Justice Anthony Mrima ruled that prosecutors had not followed constitutional requirements.
“A declaration hereby issues that prosecution of criminal offences in Kenya must only be undertaken by lawful Prosecutors,” Justice Mrima ruled.
Government expands reform agenda
President Ruto recently established the Nairobi Rivers Commission.
The nine-member commission will oversee the restoration and protection of rivers and other water bodies within Nairobi.
Pamela Olet chairs the commission.
Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu also serves as a member.
