An officer accused of shooting dead a Maseno University student during Azimio la Umoja mass protests has denied those allegations.
In a letter directed to Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome,Corporal Georgina Osoro says that she is being accused falsely.
She wants the IG to give her information regarding her assignment between 19th and 22rd March, 2023 which was the duration of the anti-government demonstrations so that she can take legal action against those who accuse her of shooting the said student.
“My life has become become extremely difficult and even security of my children is not guaranteed,I cannot send them to school,”added Georgina.
Through lawyer Danstan Omari she claims her pictures and those of her children of tender years have been circulated in social media platforms together with her mobile phone numbers thus placing her at an enormous risk of being lynched by the general public.
She claims on the day the student was shot, she was away on duty in Kisumu which is approximately 35km from Maseno town.
According to the police officer, there is no possible way she was involved in the fatal shooting incident of the student.
She indicates that a shooting incident, malicious damage to property and injury to police officers was reported when police officers had an encounter with Maseno University students’ demonstrators who barricaded Maseno- Kisumu Luanda road.
“As a result of the altercation that arose and in a bid to safeguard properties, lives and in self-defense, one demonstrator was allegedly shot and pronounced dead upon arrival at Coptic Hospital Kisumu,” she claims in the letter.
She claims that on March 21, after reports of the death of the student came out, baseless allegations were made from various quarters of the public maliciously defaming her as the person behind the fatal trigger that led to his death.
“In a scathing prejudiced public attack, my character has been immensely attacked, veiled and expressed threats to my life as well as those of my children which reports has already made,” she says in the letter.
Osoro wants the IG to supply Certified Extract from the Occurrence Book and Certified Extract from the Arms Movement Book Entries for the days of March 19 to March 21.
She also seeks the list of Police Officers assigned coverage on Monday 20 March 2023 at Kisumu town.
“We have resorted to request the aforementioned information pursuant to Article 35 (1) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 so as to take legal action against perpetrators of the falsehoods and threats against the person of our Client and her children,” state the letter to IG.
The police officer has asked the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to direct the Inspector General of Police to conduct an investigation into the occurrence.
She has also asked the Independent Police Oversight Authority and the Internal Affairs Department of the National Police Service to move with speed to investigate the occurrence and consider all the exculpatory evidence with the view of informing the entire general public that it was not possible for her to have been involved in the alleged fatal shooting
