Sebastian Onyango Calls for Accountability, Peace Amid Rising Public Concern

by Faith Karanja

Sebastian Onyango, the chairman of Justice & Equity Kenya, has called for greater accountability, transparency, and peaceful civic engagement amid growing concern over governance, public resource management, and national stability.

In a statement issued on behalf of the organisation, Onyango raised alarm over what he described as increasing cases of fraud, organised criminal activity, and the misuse of public funds.

He said such actions continue to erode public trust and threaten the security, dignity, and livelihoods of ordinary Kenyans.

He particularly expressed concern over reports of losses linked to the e-Citizen platform, urging authorities to conduct thorough and transparent investigations into the matter.

According to Onyango, any individuals or institutions found responsible for the loss, mismanagement, or diversion of public funds must be held fully accountable under the law.

Onyango also called on key oversight and investigative agencies, including the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), to move swiftly and independently in establishing the source of funds allegedly used to fuel unrest, violence, or fraudulent dealings.

He further urged Parliament to review the legal and regulatory framework governing public digital platforms to strengthen oversight, close loopholes, and safeguard public resources from abuse.

At the same time, Onyango stressed the importance of upholding peace and protecting constitutional rights, particularly the right to peaceful assembly.

With the Linda Mwananchi Rally approaching, he called on the National Police Service and all security agencies to ensure the safety of all attendees without intimidation, interference, or excessive force.

He warned politicians and other individuals against inciting violence, mobilising criminal groups, or disrupting public order, saying such actions are illegal and must be dealt with firmly.

Onyango also appealed to Kenyans to remain peaceful, vigilant, and united in rejecting violence, corruption, and impunity.

“Enough is enough,” he said, adding that Kenyans deserve transparent leadership, responsible governance, and meaningful development.

The statement was also endorsed by Justice & Equity Kenya Secretary Janet Sutton and Organising Secretary Rose Nyarkaksingri.
