Former sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa was Saturday rushed to Karen Hospital after his health condition allegedly deteriorated.
He had been detained at Muthaiga police cells since Thursday night pending his arraignment on Tuesday over claims of extortion and staged abduction.
According to the lawyer Danstan Omari said , the former CS was bleeding profusely from a surgery wound operated on a week before his arrest.
Omari further added that Echesa was meant to attend a doctor’s appointment on Friday, for a check-up and aid on the surgery wound, which was yet to heal. The police however refused to release him.
At the same time a section of western leaders have called on former Sports Cabinet secretary Rashid Echesa and Kakamega governor Fernandez Baraza to embrace dialogue following Echesa arrested and detention alleged Extortion and Self abduction l.
Speaking at Karen Hospital for on Saturday morning, shortly after Rashid Echesa was admitted at the facility after President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua intervene for his release from the police custody, lead by Kakamega senator Dr Bonny Khalwale,Matungu member of Parliament Oscar Peter Nabulindo and Koyonzo county assembly member of parliament Donald Okumu says the political difference between the former C’s and the current governor can be solved politically.
“We are concerned by the manner in which this matter is being prosecuted,all the allegations levelled against Echesa can be solved politically, however we thank the president and his deputy for saving Echesa’s life who has been in custody for more than three days”Said Khalwale.
On his part, Matungu member of Parliament Oscar Peter Nabulindo accused the police for being used to settle political scores, he asked them not be used and instead be professional in there work.
Nabulindo added that,he did not understand why Echesa was not given bond or cash bail despite the fact that his health was deteriorating under there custody before the president intervene.
“All offenses are bailable,we are yet to understand why the former Sports C’s and the current chair of the Kenya Water Towers was not given bond, remember even murder cases are or suspects are given bond.”Said Nabulindo.
The Koyonzo county assembly Mca Donald Okumu also took swipe at the governor asking him to focus on delivering on his manifesto instead of engaging in cheap politics.
According to Akumu,the Kakamega county boss should have been busy explaning to his people how fake fertilizer felt in the hands of the famers under his watch.
“This is purely cheap politics,how can whole governor fall into such a trap, instead of fighting the problem if cheap fertilizer,he is fighting his own brother over cheap allegations of witchcraft,this is a shame, let the governor come clean on this issue of Echesa”Said Akumu.
On Saturday,his lawyers Danstan Omari and Cliff Ombeta while addressing the media alongside the politicians confirmed that indeed Echesa was admitted at the facility but his life was in danger.
“The DCI have brought Echesa here at the Karen hospital after the intervention of the president and his deputy,but as lawyers we are deeply concerned why they refused to bring him here despite the fact that we avail to them medical documents,this is unfortunate and it’s uncalled for,the police need to have humane heart,and treat leaders like Echesa with dignity, remember he is the current chair of the Kenya water towers,this is a government officer ” Said Omari.
His colleague Cliff Ombeta asked the leadership of Kakamega county to consider an impeachment motion against the governor, saying it was so unfortunately that Kakamega people elected a witchcraft leader.
“If indeed it’s true,why is he afraid of the allegations,why the 240 millions bribery allegations?why disturbed with the issue witchcraft allegations?,if it’s true let him resign ,why is that a complainant was turned to be a suspect?,this is wrong and there must be something with our criminal system.Said Ombeta.
The former C’s was arrested on Wednesday by DCI officers over alleged extortion and self Abduction,he has been detained at the Muthaiga police station awaiting his arraignment in court on Tuesday next week.
