The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson M. Ingonga, OGW today joined judicial officers, staff and stakeholders in the justice sector in celebrating the life of Hon. Monica Kivuti at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi.
Hon. Kivuti who served as a Principal Magistrate, died days after a shooting incident at her work place on June 13, 2024.
The DPP, on behalf of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) Advisory Board and entire staff, conveyed a message of condolence to the Judiciary and the family of Hon. Kivuti.
The DPP said he was deeply saddened by the incident that led to Hon. Kivuti’s death.
“I was not only shocked but deeply disturbed as her life was taken away by an individual who is entrusted to protect life.” said DPP Ingonga.
He assured court officers that the National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ) is in discussions to implement measures that will ensure a safe working environment not only for judicial officers but also all participants in the criminal justice system.
The DPP confirmed that a prosecutor present in court at the time of shooting incident is deeply traumatized psychologically and physically after missing a bullet by a whisker.
Mr. Ingonga urged court users not to be discouraged by the isolated and unfortunate incident that resulted in the tragic loss of a magistrate’s life, and called on court officers to remain strong and united.
